This session explores the evolution of chronic disease and the historic application of nutrition education in diabetes care. Nutrition recommendations are well documented in the last 100 years in favor of optimal glycemic management, while the modern approach to patient-centered care nourishes the whole person. From the patient perspective, we will examine the impact of diet culture and why people with diabetes develop complicated relationships with food. The role of the dietitian and DCES is critical in reframing nutrition education from an approach that is often perceived as oppressive into one that is progressive. This session highlights the importance of considering the method of interconnected health combined with optimistic coaching when working to enhance quality of life with diabetes.
