People with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke than people without diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends routine monitoring of cholesterol. In addition to diet and lifestyle modifications, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recommend the initiation of pharmacotherapy in people with diabetes based on individual heart disease risk (which can be determined by calculating 10-Year Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk - ASCVD). In the last ten years, healthcare professionals have seen the approval of several novel pharmacotherapy drug classes for patients with the highest risk of cardiovascular disease. This presentation aims to review the most up-to-date guidelines and treatment for cholesterol/ASCVD risk in people with and without diabetes.
