Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of death among people in the United States, affecting 37 million people. It is estimated that CKD can affect 20 to 40% of people with diabetes. Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) have been shown to improve renal function, independent of glycemic action and be beneficial among people with CKD regardless of diabetes status. Clinical practice guidelines recommend SGLT2i for people with CKD, independent of glycemic management. This session will review the mechanism of action for SGLT2i to improve renal outcomes and summarize clinical evidence supporting SGLT2i in people with CKD with or without diabetes. Overall, this session will promote evidence-based and best practices to change the culture for utilizing SGLT2i in clinical practice.
