Dr. James R. Gavin III is Chief Medical Officer of Healing Our Village, Inc., a clinical professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Gavin is also a clinical diabetes consultant and instructor at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Gavin received his medical degree from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and his PhD from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He served his internship at Duke University and at Barnes Hospital in St Louis, Missouri, before completing his residency and fellowship at Barnes Hospital. Dr. Gavin has held a number of distinguished positions during his career, including senior scientific officer at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, William K. Warren Professor of Diabetes Studies at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, past president of Morehouse School of Medicine, past president of the American Diabetes Association, and past Chair of the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP). He served as National Program Director of the Harold Amos Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He is a trustee emeritus of Emory University, a trustee emeritus of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and is Chairman Emeritus of the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA). He is currently a member of the editorial board for Endocrinology Today and has served as Chair of the data and safety monitoring board for the Veteran’s Administration Diabetes Treatment (VADT) Program. He is immediate past chair of the advisory committee to the director for intramural research at the National Institutes of Health. In 2009, Dr. Gavin was designated a “Living Legend in Diabetes” by AADE. In 2015 he received a Lifetime Achievement in Diabetes Award from the American Diabetes Association, and a Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award from the National Medical Association. He is recipient of the 2021 Laureate Mentor of the Year from the Endocrine Society.
