The rates of both gestational diabetes and mental illness in pregnancy are rising. Postpartum depression is the most common complication of pregnancy. A history of diabetes or a diagnosis of gestational diabetes can be a risk factor for developing postpartum depression. This complication can result in devastating consequences for women and their babies. DCESs are in an ideal position to address this mental health problem by providing strategies to prevent this problem or educate, support and share resources to assist women through this potentially serious mental health situation.
