Hearing loss is invisible and affects the diabetes care and education program directly by interfering with the person with diabetes, comprehension of the program, and therefore the person's ability to self-manage and reach desired outcomes. Additionally, the risk of falls is amplified directly by the vestibular effects of diabetes, in addition to the effects of vision loss and foot neuropathology. Inclusion of hearing and fall risk components (including screening elements for hearing and fall risk) in diabetes care and education programs elevates the success and productivity of the person with diabetes.
