Well-run diabetes camps/retreats offer unique peer support opportunities for people with diabetes to share and support each other's common challenges and successes. This encourages the adoption of positive solutions to living with diabetes under the guidance of a resident DCES. This session will highlight how these programs offer real-world diabetes education opportunities with peers, recreation, and medical staff through active participation, sharing, and discussing the following: meals and recipes, the effects of food, exercises, insulin, medications, stress, and high and low blood sugars on diabetes management. "Teachable Moments" occur day and night. Positive role models among participants and staff often strengthen participants' abilities to focus on and tend to the challenges of balancing diabetes. They spread the mantra: YES, YOU CAN DO IT!
