When treating the black community with diabetes, we have made great strides in delivering culturally competent care. However, barriers that still remain are efficient provider engagement and empowering people to assume an active role in their care. Research has shown that taking a person-centered approach will not only increase provider-patient engagement but will lead to increased patient satisfaction and ultimately, improved health outcomes. The DIASPORA Approach is a practical but powerful provider approach that highlights what the African diaspora is and its significance in the care delivered to the black community. This approach presents actionable steps and techniques that lead to increased engagement in this population.
