Gastroparesis is a challenging complication of diabetes. Flares of gastroparesis result in DKA (Diabetes-Related Ketoacidosis), frequent/ prolonged hospitalization, and impact quality of life for those with the diagnosis. A community hospital in central Maryland identified the lack of standardized care to manage gastroparesis in acute settings and as a result, a multidisciplinary team was created to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. The treatment plan is initiated in the Emergency Department and continues through admission and discharge. The goal of the plan is to reverse acute symptoms, reduce hospital admissions, improve health and quality of life for those with gastroparesis. This presentation highlights the development and details of the comprehensive acute care gastroparesis treatment plan.
