The communication barrier while using facemasks is more than just a pandemic problem. A practitioner may be required to use a facemask while caring for patients who have immunosuppression from blood disorders (aplastic anemia), cancer, chemotherapy, AIDS, hepatitis, severe burns, or malnutrition. The masks distort sound and make speech harder to comprehend, even if the patient has normal hearing. If the patient also has hearing loss, the process of understanding someone wearing a mask is much more difficult. This presentation will offer several solutions to simplify practitioner communication with others while wearing a facemask. These solutions will make your DCES visits more effective and efficient.
