In rural Appalachia, grassroots leaders, community members and healthcare professionals joined forces to address local health disparities and co-morbidities faced by the vulnerable pediatric population. McDowell County, NC has a diabetes prevalence rate of 20% and an above average incidence of obesity, with 1 in 4 individuals experiencing food insecurity. This causes many barriers to achieving health and wellness. The Produce for Peds program featured in this presentation seeks to ease this burden by introducing children and families to fresh local produce, healthful recipes, community resources, the "Produce for Peds" garden, and positive interactions with their care team. It aims to bring awareness and support for local food systems, farmers and food producers, decreasing existing health inequities. This demonstrates the power of shared vision and action in promoting health through food.
