Diabetes prevention programs (DPPs) promote lifestyle changes and weight loss to prevent diabetes. While effective, weight loss is often modest and transient, and it is unclear which components cause improved health outcomes. DPPs without a weight loss component are sometimes as effective as those that focus on weight loss. We will review what DPP research doesn’t tell us about diabetes prevention, including sources of bias affecting the quality of our conclusions. Explore ideas for future research in diabetes prevention, including identifying the mechanisms for change that improve patient outcomes. Learn how to improve the messaging regarding diabetes to help it align with the ADCES language guidelines, ethical creed and our larger intention to help people with diabetes.
