Athletes with T1D are faced with the challenges of training and managing blood glucose values in order to be competitive in their sport. Sports nutrition goals for athletes with T1D are similar to those without diabetes; however, frequent blood glucose monitoring, adjusting insulin doses and timing carbohydrate intake around training are all necessary to maintain euglycemia and enhance sports performance. This session will discuss how learning to eat like an athlete by balancing carbohydrate intake as well as adjusting insulin doses is important to not only reach sports performance goals but to prevent glycemic variability.
