Hypertension is a major contributor to both atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in people with diabetes, and microvascular complications. Hypertension can neither be diagnosed nor optimally treated without access to consistently accurate blood pressure values. There is reason to believe that blood pressure measurement done in the “usual and customary” manner in medical clinics often does not produce reliable data. This session will highlight the need to institute universally standardized procedures, including the use of validated blood pressure devices, periodic training updates for staff, and routine use of home blood pressure and/or ambulatory blood pressure measurements to verify diagnosis and effectiveness of therapy.
