Diabetes is one of the most emotionally taxing chronic medical illnesses, with the burden of its management largely falling on individuals with no clear end in sight. It is no surprise that people with T1D and T2D are at higher risk for suicidality. Furthermore, many people with diabetes carry potentially lethal means for self-injury on their person at all times. However, with appropriate monitoring and support, this risk can be mitigated and potentially ameliorated. In this presentation, you will learn what makes suicidality particularly common for people with diabetes as well as what you can do about it, including both systemic-level variables to consider and best practices for your role in caring for people with diabetes.
