A small number of patients are being educated about the proper handling of diabetes care-related waste and sharps upon initial use of glucose meters and injectables. When considering the copious amounts of diabetes care-related waste generated, diabetes care and educational specialist (DCES) need to be informed about the proper handling of this waste. In addition, the majority of persons with diabetes receive their initial glucose meter and injection training from a health care worker other than a DCES, so dissemination of this information to other health care workers should be a priority. This poster describes how an educational poster and handout about the proper handling of diabetes care-related waste was developed, approved, and distributed to staff and patients.
