Tanner was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 8. He is an Honors College graduate from Ball State University with a dual degree in Health Science and Spanish, later completing an M.S. in Exercise Science in 2019. He is an active diabetes spokesperson and collegiate swimming coach.
