As we emerge from COVID-19, it is imperative that changes imposed on DSMES services and DCESs be examined to identify best practices for leveraging technology to allow access to diabetes care. Although telehealth was provided prior to COVID-19, it was not reimbursed by most payers in a non-rural setting. The pandemic forced programs to pivot to almost exclusive use of telehealth platforms. Technology was used across all populations as clinicians provided care remotely and people with diabetes learned to upload their blood glucose results and receive their healthcare through video visits. Communication and support were provided via self-directed learning platforms and chatbots. Based on this experience, presenters will discuss how to leverage the opportunity to provide care to broader populations in the future.
