People living with disability experience judgment, stigma, shame and depression. DCESs understand that without healthy coping skills, an individual with diabetes is unlikely to perform the necessary self management tasks. The barriers a person encounters when dealing with a chronic disease can seem insurmountable. The DCES needs to be able to empathize with the individual's situation in order to be an ally in their care plan and advocate for their needs. Yet it is difficult to truly understand if you have not personally experienced that particular disability. In this session, we will examine the historical and current perspectives of people with disability, the barriers they face and how the DCES can assist and support them.
