This session will describe Diabetes in KY Schools training program designed to meet KRS-314.011(6) legislation standards. The training program is geared towards school nurses and unlicensed school personnel (UPs) who care for children and adolescents with diabetes within the KY school system. The program provides an overview of diabetes care, including dietary and exercise recommendations, carbohydrate counting, managing blood glucose highs and lows, and common diabetes medications. The program was developed by a team of stakeholders consisting of diabetes experts from across the state of Kentucky. Now in its second year, the training program serves as a tool for school nurses who are training UPs on the specifics of diabetes care and includes a competency checklist for assessing the UP's diabetes care knowledge.
