T1D accounts for approximately five percent of all diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. Almost half of the children who develop T1D experience diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) at diagnosis and many adults are initially misdiagnosed. This has been associated with increased mortality risk, extended hospitalization and cognitive deficits. Recent updates to clinical guidelines include the staging of pre-symptomatic T1D and updated recommendations for diagnostic autoantibody assays. Research suggests that early detection of multiple autoantibodies and follow-up monitoring can reduce the risk of DKA at diagnosis. This presentation will review the staging of T1D, the relationship between early autoantibody detection and DKA prevention, and current research aimed at preventing or delaying T1D onset.
