Approximately 245,000 people visit the emergency room for severe hypoglycemia, of which 25% will be hospitalized due to this safety concern. Only 10% of people with diabetes will fill a glucagon prescription following a visit to the emergency room. In addition, there are 5.6 to 7.4 million people on insulin therapy and only 600,000 glucagon prescriptions are filled annually, indicating a gap in diabetes management. This session will review the classification and treatment options for hypoglycemia and will discuss clinical experience and evidence-based practices for the treatment and prevention of hypoglycemia using two case vignettes.
